While Jobs are Being Cut Today, Some Jobs are More Stable Than Ever

June 30th, 2009 Posted in Education | No Comments »

Mainly large corporations are downsizing these days due to the poor economy. One good example are the large car companies such as Chrysler and GM have now claimed bankruptcy trying to save themselves. Most of the more prominent executives are losing their jobs in these companies and in many other businesses in America. These traditionally white collar jobs are becoming harder to not only keep but to find today. The more service oriented and physically trying blue collar jobs however are still sturdy in many businesses and continue to hire. Many former workers that used to sit at a desk are now signing on for jobs where they are using their hands and bodies much more. After completing the required training to learn a new skill such as roof repair, they are also made aware of the probable physical dangers of the job like fall protection and using industrial safety gates to ensure their safety while on the steep roof of a home or building. Although it seems more dangerous, severalof these former desk workers are enjoying being out in themiddle of things and feeling like they are making a difference each day.

Community colleges have shown a great increase in enrollment not only to recent high school graduates due to the savings than a traditional four year college but also to older Americans that are looking to get training or education in a new skill or a new career field. Health care jobs continue to have a shortagethese days. Many people are now attending nursing schools to find a new more stable career where available jobs are abundant. The othercareer field that seems to be booming because of natural disasters over the past several years are tree companies and roofing specialists. Many hurricanes, tornadoes and large wind storms have wreaked havoc on many areas across the country recentlyand that trend just seems to be increasing. When a large hurricane hit in Texas last year, the storm was so great that it carried all the way up through mid western states such as Ohio where hurricanes had never been experienced before. Some say this is from global warming and the change of our climate and atmosphere. Whatever the cause, these storms have left areas in desperate need ofhelp following a storm. Tree companies were being notifed from various stateslast year following that hurricane to help with all of the fallen electrical lines and loss of power to millions of Americans. This is an example of one of those jobs that appears to need more people working in it. After realizing that need, more Americans are searching for the demand and job security and switching to jobs such as the ones at a tree company. It is a higher risk physically but with the proper training and safety devices, the continual employment and job security is imperative to these new job applicants at the moment. This is a true example of taking lemons and turning it into lemonade.

Having Fun On A Language Course

June 30th, 2009 Posted in Education | No Comments »

The best way to learn a foreign language is to live amongst those who speak it as a native language. But the downside is that one needs to make sure that they are happy in that environment, otherwise their learning might suffer and then it becomes a pointless exercise.

So instead of permanently relocating, many people go on an extended trip to the country instead. Sometimes, the very best opportunities to gain experience speaking the new language can come from the most simple tasks - for example catching a bus or buying an item from a shop.

One of the reasons for this is because when someone is presented with a study course, or left to choose which parts of the language they study, they fail to tackle the really difficult parts (for a variety of reasons). But when the focus is simply on getting something done (such as catching a bus or buying some food) they have no choice in the matter and no way of avoiding learning the necessary words and vocabulary in order to complete the task. If you are going to go overseas for a language course you might as well learn as much as possible!

Another reason is that the student is not just reciting phrases from a book. Conversations will develop into unexpected verbal ‘territory’ and the student will have to try to be understood. It’s a lot easier to give up on a difficult task when failure only involves closing a book. When it involves walking out of a shop empty-handed, or walking off a bus - it’s a little more frustrating, therefore the person learning the language is much more likely to dig in,learn quickly and retain the information - fear of embarassment is a great learning tool!

There are many obvious benefits, and also many not so obvious ones, of being immersed in a situation where the student is surrounded by those who are speaking the target language naturally. For example, even if they are not actually involved, being surrounded by others can lead to many situations where the learner picks up language skills just by listening to others speaking it naturally as their mother tongue - often, they are not even aware that they are doing it. This type of learning is especially useful for picking up different tones and emphasis used in the language.

An excellent way to encourage the mind to develop all of the skills required to master a new language is distraction. For example, imagine spending day after day consciously trying to learn a language. Once the task becomes boring or tedious, the mind has a tendency to rebel in order to remove the perceived ‘pain’ felt by continuing with the task. Trying to learn a new language, like the English language for example, should be enjoyable, not a chore.

A great way to use this technique also has many other benefits. If the whole language course is constructed in a way where serious study sessions are interspersed with fun and relaxing activities, not only will they have a more enjoyable vacation, but they will also become less bored during the difficult study periods. The activities can also be set up so that during this time, the learner is exposed to the language they are learning and is also required to converse in the language as well.

Especially if the student is quite young, they can also gain further from these activities. They can get involved in character and team building exercises for example. This will develop their communication skills, their boldness and confidence, plus it can help to develop initiative. These things will all contribute to the learner’s future success, and helps to ensure that they not only learn about and experience languages, but also many other things as well. This way, they will not feel that the whole course has been one long study session, but in reality they will have picked up language skills throughout the time spent. Many language course students will be pleased to hear this - you learn much more when you’re having lots of fun!

Municipal Water Treatment and Filtering of Surface Water

June 30th, 2009 Posted in Food and Drink | No Comments »

At the onset of its existence, no one had to think about treating America’s wastewater. Left to nature, the purification process took place slowly but surely. However, now that the population has grown by leaps and bounds and many more contaminants are being pumped into the water supply, actions need to be taken in order to speed up nature’s cleaning process. The Clean Water Act of 1972 was created to provide a base for maintaining the United States’ most important resource, clean water. Municipal water treatment has become a part of our daily lives.

Up until the mid 1900s, the nation’s waterways in highly-populated parts of the country were loaded with pollutants, but no one was really concerned about it. Today, however, we not only realize that clean drinking water is a valuable resource but also that clean water is imperative to maintaining the ecosystems of our world and vital in ensuring national health. Cities, then, have been required to become responsible for taking the steps necessary to disinfect the wastewater generated in their community and eradicating dangerous pollutants. Municipal water treatment plants were built to deal with the problem of filtering the water and making it clean enough for drinking again.

An assortment of types of filtration have been tried with varying amounts of success. Back in 1892, there were only 27 American cities that supplied wastewater treatment for their citizens. Today we have more 16,000 water treatment facilities operating all over the country. Municipal water treatment systems start when wastewater enters the treatment plant where it runs through screens of different densities. Some screens with holes about

Surviving Your First Day on the Job

June 29th, 2009 Posted in Education | No Comments »

Job hunting can be tiresome. What is more tiresome is acing an interview. If you managed to land a job, though, it is time for you to look forward for your first day at work. The only main advice here is to not screw it up. It is easy to screw up your first day on the job. Forming early friendships and wanting to be liked by everyone can easily damage your future reputation at the office. Fortunately for you, there are quick and easy techniques to help you survive your first day on the job.

First things First

Always remember that first impressions always last. What you make during your first day at work can have a lasting effect on the office. It can definitely affect the way others in the office perceive you as a person. People are easy to judge and you better remember that.

So, what you can do is to make yourself look presentable. Before going to work, make sure that you have every equipment and business apparel you need. Match your office couture with some leather briefcase for women to create a more presentable look. Just make sure that you are following the company’s dress code.

Another thing you must make sure to outfit is your desk. As this would be your space for the next years, it is important to put everything you need in place. Things as simple as a pen and letter openers are important. Make sure that you have everything you need ready especially for that important first meeting with your boss.

Important Tasks

It is extremely important to meet with your boss during your first day. This way, you’ll have a run through of your job description. You can ask questions about your job, office policies and a lot more. Make sure that before the meeting ends, everything you need to know is answered.

Also, know your position in the office. It is easier to delegate tasks when you exactly know who to call. The people within your reach must also have interpersonal relationships. You must know these relationships to be able to exactly learn how to correctly approach them.

More importantly, don’t be too fast in treating a co-employee to lunch. Keep any of your women’s wallets to yourself and avoid forming friendships this early. This is not entirely necessary for your survival.

Your Approach to Others

It is easy for the office environment to be more like high school. If you do try to make friends with others, do so in a manner that will be acceptable to all. If not, you would find yourself belonging to a clique and this would considerably harm your reputation.

It is very important to always be polite, respectful ad professional. Even if you are dealing with your subordinates, make sure that you deal with them in a nice and harmless manner. This can easily secure your position in the office and allow you to make any changes with the way to handle others.

Lastly, don’t gossip or create anything to fuel gossip. It is easy for office politics to get dirty and you surely don’t want to get caught up with it. Keep personal information to yourself and you’ll easily survive longer at work.

Saxophone Buying Tips For Beginners

June 29th, 2009 Posted in Arts, Entertainment and Music | No Comments »

Are you considering the purchase of a new saxophone? Here are some saxophone basics that might assist you in your choice.

Saxophones were invented in the 1840s. A man called Adolphe Sax first invented them. You won’t normally find them played in traditional or classic music but they have become extremely popular in bands in pop music. Because of their unique tones, they are utilised in many different musical genres. It has often been commented a similar sound of saxophone is a human voice, which is why they produce such an emotionally charged sound.

Nowadays you will find that cheaper saxophones are extremely competitively priced thus enabling the average person to purchase and learn to play them. Obviously, the absolute best top models are not cheap, but as with everything they are also budget models and cheap imports available for the person without as much money to spend. Saxophones are normally made from brass and coated with a colored or clear and lacquer, even though they are classed as woodwind instruments. The lacquer not only protects the metal but it also gives it a fine look. The more common type is manufactured from yellow brass which comprises 30% zinc and 70% copper. But there are also other materials used to make them such as gold brass and silver brass. Obviously they are going to be cheap, but you can even find some that are made from gold and silver plate.

The standard type of saxophones are either baritone, tenor, alto and soprano. Other more unusual types are the mezzo soprano, bass, conn-o-sax, contrabass, f baritone, c soprano, sopranino and quite a few more as well. Each different type of saxophone is a little different to play and many saxophone players find that even though they they have mastered the one type, it doesn’t mean that they can automatically play all of the others.

There are many places where you can purchase a saxophone online, but as with any expensive item be sure to do your due diligence on the seller first in order to avoid being ripped off.
